The world of babycarriers is both fascinating and mesmerizing. So many choices make it thrilling to pick one, a few, or in some cases, many babycarriers, to help our little ones thrive as well as to make caring for them easier in our lives as parents.
But so many choices also mean it can be hard to choose the right ones.
Enters Baby K’tan Baby Carrier
I was lucky to try a babycarrier the reknown company Baby K’tan sent me.
I was amazed by the simplicity of its design and easiness of carrying my one-year-old the way we love to. But more on it later!
Baby K’tan babycarrier is like a wrap that is already set to facilitate the task of wearing our young child. I was intrigued by the unique shape of the carrier, consisting of two layers of loops, and a sash that comes with a useful pocket.
Opening the box, we have clear instructions on how we can carry – there are varied positions that can satisfy everyone.
The setting up is really quick, something we can value when we breastfeed or feed in arms multiple times, or when our little one is fussy.
The carrier comes in varied sizes too, that a mom can choose according to her pre-pregnancy size, and are defined for men too, a must in our days with shared caregiving. If you are not of the same size though, you may have to buy two of the K’tan carrier.
It helps that it is affordable, ranging around $50 to $60 for a new one, or, an option I love for the environment, around $35 for a “gently used” one that has been reverified.
What’s cool about Baby K’tan Baby Carriers
The cotton fabric makes a good choice for any weather. In the summer, if you’re like me and tend to heat, the fact that it breathes well is very interesting.
For the baby, it is softly tight, and as a cuddly blanket. You can do kangaroo care with it, skin-to-skin that it so good for the newborn’s development, in the comfort of your home. The carrier offers ergonomic positions.
You can breastfeed in it or use it as a cover for breasfeeding if it’s your style.
For the one who carries, I love that you can distribute the weight on the shoulder as thin or large straps, and twist them if you like. It helps the straining to change positions when you carry a few hours.
When you’re not using the babycarrier but moving around, you can easily carry it in a large purse, the sash turned tote storage, or a discovery, as an infinity scarf! The minimalist in me loves it.
And when a company offers organic choices, I melt. They do!
ProTips
If the fabric stretches too much after a while, washing it can help to make it tight again.
For a newborn the front carry (the one called “hug”) position is excellent as you keep an eye on him at all times and he is in the supportive frog position that prevents hip dysplasia. For the same reasons, I would not use the baby facing forward (“adventure”) position as it tends to be uncomfortable for the baby’s back and private parts, potentially stressful as he doesn’t see you and can’t take cues from you, and not supportive enough of his legs. And I would use the cradle (“kangaroo”) position only to breastfeed, because we have to watch for open airways at all times and it doesn’t tend to strengthen the baby’s muscles.
For a baby around 9 months, I advise to use often a version of hip carry (I tend to be extra careful and still keep an arm around my baby as if I was carrying her without a wrap or carrier), as it respects the natural position of his hips and would be the most natural one.
Is it for you?
For a newborn, some users have said to use a smaller size than what you normally wear, as it makes it tight to support the baby well. I would say it depends. I would try to keep in mind too if I put extra weight during pregnancy, and have a biggest chest size because of solely breastfeeding, or being muscular. Picking it the right size means that it can be used for a longer time.
You may want to think about which period of the year you will wear your baby more, and how you will do it. If it’s in the summer or you love positions that cover a lot of your body, you might want to go with a light color to keep the heat off.
If it’s your first time babycarrying, I believe you can’t go wrong with this choice, with its many options.
If you have a limited budget, this could be the only babycarrier you’d need.
And finally, if it can be of help, it definitely is for me, my baby, and my newborn to be, because I love its versatility and that I can put it on quickly.
And a plus over other structured carriers, wraps, or slings is that I can do a comfortable, quick, and secure hip carry, our favorite one once baby supports his head. I would have loved to know about this product earlier in my mom life.
